Overview of the Problem – Backyard Flooding During Heavy Rain
At a property on Sovereign Close in Patterson Lakes VIC 3197, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the homeowner reported that the backyard was turning into a lake every time the area copped a heavy downpour.
Initial checks showed the home had modern 90mm uPVC downpipes, not older terracotta drainage, and because there was no kerb discharge point at the front, it was clear the stormwater system discharged toward the council infrastructure through the nature strip.
This is exactly the type of issue where homeowners start asking, “why is my backyard flooding when the downpipes look fine?” or “how do you find a stormwater pipe problem if the drain is full of water?” As an experienced plumber Patterson Lakes, we often find that stormwater problems like this are not always caused by a simple blockage — sometimes the real issue is structural damage hidden underground.
Why a Standard Camera Inspection Was Not Enough
The stormwater system was completely backed up, which created a major problem for normal inspection.
When a drain is fully waterlogged, the camera lens often sees nothing but black, which means the exact cause of failure cannot be confirmed by standard viewing alone.
At that point, the real possibilities were:
- a blockage
- a flat section of pipe with poor fall
- or a crushed or collapsed pipe section stopping the flow completely
This is something we often explain on blocked drains Melbourne jobs, because once the line is fully flooded, finding the exact fault often requires a different type of locating method rather than just pushing a camera blindly.
Using Sonde and Locator Technology to Find the Hidden Failure
Because the drain was too water-filled for normal visual inspection, we switched to a more advanced locating method.
We attached a Ridgid Remote Transmitter (512 Hz Sonde) to the end of our hydro-jetting hose. As the hose travelled through the line, the sonde transmitted a signal underground that could be tracked from above.
This allowed us to follow the stormwater line through the yard and determine exactly where the hose stopped progressing.
The line stopped abruptly at around 8 metres from the downpipe, close to the driveway.
We then used our Ridgid NaviTrack Scout® Locator to pick up the sonde signal through the ground, which gave us:
- the exact location of the obstruction
- a depth reading of approximately 350mm
- a precise excavation point rather than guesswork
This is exactly the sort of situation where CCTV drain inspection Melbourne and locating technology work hand in hand, even when the line itself cannot be viewed clearly on camera because of full water surcharge.
Excavation Confirmed the Pipe Had Been Squashed
Once the location was marked, we excavated a trench around 1 metre long at the identified point and exposed the stormwater line.
The cause became obvious immediately.
The 90mm uPVC stormwater pipe had been completely squashed flat.
Rather than being blocked by roots or debris alone, the line had been structurally crushed, which explained why no meaningful flow could get through during heavy rain.
From the appearance and location of the failure, the most likely cause was heavy surface loading during the original construction of the home, such as:
- trade vehicles
- building machinery
- repeated pressure over the grassed area above the shallow drain
Why 90mm Stormwater Pipe Can Be Vulnerable
We explained to the homeowner that 90mm stormwater pipe is much lighter-duty than the thicker 100mm DWV pipe commonly used in sewer applications.
When stormwater pipe is only buried around 300–400mm deep, it can be vulnerable to crushing if heavy loads are applied from above.
That made this case a very good example of how even a relatively modern stormwater system can fail if the pipe is not adequately protected from external loading.
Replacing the Crushed Stormwater Section
Once the failed section had been exposed, we:
- cut out the damaged 1-metre pipe section
- removed the years of trapped silt and roof debris sitting behind it
- replaced the crushed section with new high-quality uPVC stormwater pipe
- reconnected the line properly so the discharge path was restored
All replacement pipework and couplings were sourced from Reece Plumbing Carrum Downs.
This restored the stormwater main to a proper full-bore flow path rather than leaving the system choked at the damaged point.
Final Result and Client Outcome
With the damaged section replaced, the stormwater system was able to discharge properly again into the council main.
The final result gave the homeowner:
- the exact underground fault located without unnecessary large-scale digging
- the squashed pipe section removed
- trapped debris behind the damaged section cleared out
- proper stormwater flow restored
- confidence that future heavy rain would no longer flood the backyard
The owner was especially pleased that the locating technology avoided a much larger and more expensive excavation process.
Compliance with Australian Standards
This case related directly to the diagnosis, location, excavation, and replacement of a failed stormwater drain section, which falls under the drainage principles referenced in AS/NZS 3500.2.
In practical terms, this meant the stormwater problem was not just temporarily opened or guessed at. The damaged pipe section was located accurately, exposed only where necessary, and renewed properly so the system could discharge as intended again.
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing and drainage standards so stormwater faults are investigated accurately and repaired with long-term reliability in mind.
