Overview of the Problem – Aquamax Pilot Light Kept Going Out
At a property on Sandhurst Court in Wheelers Hill VIC 3150, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the homeowner reported that their Aquamax 390 SS mains pressure gas hot water system kept losing the pilot light.
That meant the household was dealing with unreliable hot water and repeated interruptions to normal use. On premium stainless steel systems like the Aquamax 390 SS, this type of fault often points to a problem in the ignition or flame-sensing side of the unit, but it still needs to be diagnosed properly before the right repair path is clear.
This is exactly the type of situation where homeowners start asking, “why does my Aquamax pilot light keep going out?” or “is my hot water unit faulty or is there a bigger gas issue?” As an experienced plumber Wheelers Hill, we often find that pilot light faults can sometimes be caused by the heater itself, but sometimes the real cause sits further back in the property’s gas supply.
Why We Did Not Stop at the Obvious Hot Water Fault
At first glance, the pilot light issue looked like a straightforward thermocouple problem, which is a common failure point on older gas hot water systems.
However, with gas appliances it is important not to assume the first visible fault is the whole story. We needed to confirm:
- whether the unit had the correct components installed
- whether the burner assembly was in good condition
- whether the gas supply to the heater was operating within specification
- whether the problem was inside the hot water system or upstream in the gas supply
This is something we often explain on hot water system repairs and gas leaks jobs, because gas appliance reliability depends not only on the appliance itself, but also on stable and adequate supply pressure.
Finding a Non-Genuine Thermocouple Inside the Aquamax
Once we opened the unit, we discovered that a previous repair had been carried out using a Performa Universal Thermocouple rather than a genuine Aquamax part.
That was an important finding.
While universal parts may sometimes function initially, they do not always deliver the same fit, response, or longevity as the correct manufacturer component. On a system like the Aquamax 390 SS, that matters because the pilot and flame-sensing side needs to operate accurately and consistently.
So before anything else, we corrected that issue properly.
Repairing the Aquamax Unit Properly
To carry out the repair, we:
- disconnected the gas supply
- removed the burner assembly
- disconnected the piezo lighter
- disconnected the main gas supply pipe to the control valve
- removed the affected assembly for servicing
Once the assembly was out, we thoroughly cleaned the burner and replaced the non-genuine thermocouple with a genuine Aquamax Thermocouple sourced from Reece Plumbing Rowville.
This gave the unit the correct component setup again and addressed the most obvious internal cause of the recurring pilot problem.
Leak Checking the Internal Gas Connections
Before relighting the unit, we also carried out careful internal gas leak checking using Rectorseal Better Bubble micro-leak detector liquid on the relevant connections.
That confirmed the reassembled gas side of the hot water system was sealed correctly before the appliance was returned to service.
This is something we often explain on gas leaks and gas appliance jobs, because every disturbance to gas-carrying joints needs to be checked carefully before the job is considered complete.
Why We Continued Testing After the Unit Fired Up
After the new genuine thermocouple was installed, the Aquamax fired up properly.
However, we did not stop there.
Because the unit had been suffering repeated pilot problems, we wanted to confirm whether the appliance was receiving the operating gas pressure it actually needed to run reliably over time.
This is often the difference between a basic repair and a proper diagnosis. A heater can relight temporarily, but still remain unreliable if the gas supply feeding it is unstable or inadequate.
Manometer Testing Revealed a Bigger Gas Supply Problem
Using a manometer, we checked the gas operating pressure and compared it against the required performance levels for the appliance.
That testing showed the unit was only receiving 0.7 kPa of gas pressure, which was below the expected operating requirement.
That was a major finding because it told us the problem was not just inside the Aquamax. Even with the genuine thermocouple now fitted, the heater was still being starved by low incoming gas pressure.
At that point, we shifted the diagnosis upstream to the property’s main gas supply.
Testing at the Meter Confirmed the Real Root Cause
We then carried out a gas pressure test at the meter regulator itself.
That reading showed the gas pressure at the meter was only around 0.9 kPa, which was also below the required minimum level for proper downstream appliance performance.
That meant the root cause was not limited to the water heater. The entire property’s gas supply was being throttled by a faulty or underperforming gas meter regulator.
This was the critical turning point in the job, because it separated:
- the appliance-side repair we completed
- from the wider gas network issue that still needed to be addressed by the gas distributor
Why This Diagnosis Saved the Homeowner from Repeat Failure
If we had stopped after replacing the thermocouple, the homeowner might have had temporary improvement but still ended up with ongoing hot water reliability issues.
Because we continued testing, we were able to show that:
- the genuine Aquamax repair was necessary
- but the hot water system was also being affected by inadequate gas pressure at the meter
- meaning the supply regulator fault had to be addressed as well
That gave the owner a much clearer picture of what was really happening and prevented the appliance from being blamed unfairly for a broader gas supply issue.
Coordinating the Next Step with the Gas Distributor
Once we had the test results, we assisted the homeowner with the next stage by helping them contact Origin Energy Australia regarding the faulty gas regulator on the street side of the meter.
We provided the technical findings needed to support an urgent request for regulator assessment and upgrade so the property’s gas supply could be restored to the correct operating range.
That meant the owner was not left guessing or trying to explain a vague issue — they had proper pressure data behind the request.
Final Result and Client Outcome
Once the works and testing were complete, the homeowner had:
- the Aquamax unit repaired with a genuine thermocouple
- the burner assembly cleaned and reassembled correctly
- the internal gas connections leak checked
- the true gas supply problem identified at the meter
- technical evidence ready for the gas distributor to act on
The homeowner was very pleased because the job did not stop at a basic part replacement. Instead, they got a proper diagnosis of both the appliance fault and the wider gas pressure issue affecting the property.
Compliance with Australian Standards
This case directly related to the diagnosis, servicing, and testing of a domestic gas hot water appliance together with gas supply verification in line with the principles referenced under AS/NZS 5601.1.
In practical terms, this meant the job was not just about relighting a pilot. It required the correct appliance-side repair, proper leak checking after reassembly, and manometer testing to confirm whether the heater was receiving adequate gas pressure from the property’s supply system.
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing and gas standards so gas appliance faults are not just patched, but properly investigated through to the true root cause.
