Overview of the Job – Building an Outdoor Shower for a Beachside Home
At a property on Sea Parade in Mentone VIC 3194, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the new owner wanted a custom-built outdoor shower installed for rinsing off after the beach.
Because this was a beachside property, the owner did not want a standard chrome-plated setup that would quickly deteriorate in the salty coastal air. The brief was clear: they wanted something timeless in appearance, practical to use, and far more durable in the Mentone environment.
This is exactly the type of project where homeowners start asking, “what is the best outdoor shower for a beachside home?” or “will normal outdoor tapware corrode near the bay?” As an experienced plumber Mentone, we often explain that in coastal suburbs, material choice matters just as much as the plumbing work itself.
Finding the Best Water Supply Location
Before planning the outdoor shower layout, we investigated the downstairs plumbing to work out the most practical and visually clean connection point.
We identified the ideal location behind the existing laundry, which allowed us to tap directly into the hot and cold water points inside the laundry cupboard.
That meant the new outdoor shower could be supplied properly without unnecessary long pipe runs or awkward exposed connections elsewhere on the property.
Why the Water Pressure Needed to Be Addressed First
As part of our standard diagnostic and compliance process, we also carried out a water pressure test before starting the installation.
That check confirmed the home’s pressure was sitting just above 600 kPa, which is above the 500 kPa maximum referenced under AS/NZS 3500.
This was a very important finding, because high pressure does not just affect indoor plumbing. On a new outdoor installation, excessive pressure can also:
- increase wear on valves and fittings
- make water flow harsher and less controlled
- contribute to noise and water hammer
- shorten the service life of the new shower and other fixtures around the home
So before the custom shower build could be completed properly, the home’s incoming pressure needed to be brought under control.
This is something we often explain on pressure limiting valve and PRV installation jobs, because protecting a new installation starts at the meter, not just at the fixture.
Why Raw Copper and Brass Were the Right Choice for Mentone
Because the home was so close to the coast, we intentionally moved away from a standard chrome outdoor shower concept.
Instead, we designed the installation around:
- 15mm hard-drawn copper pipe
- brass control hardware
This gave the client a much more suitable long-term outcome for a bayside environment.
Copper was the right material because:
- it is strong and reliable
- it does not pit like chrome in salty air
- it develops a natural patina over time rather than deteriorating unattractively
- it suited the raw, industrial style the owner wanted
In a beachside suburb like Mentone, that choice made much more sense than fitting standard plated tapware likely to show corrosion quickly.
Pressure Protection Before the Outdoor Shower Installation
Before starting the visible shower build itself, we installed a pressure regulating valve at the water meter.
This brought the property’s pressure down to a safe and compliant level and ensured the new shower would not be exposed to unnecessary pressure stress from day one.
That step also benefited the rest of the home, not just the outdoor shower, by reducing pressure-related wear on the wider plumbing system.
Custom Copper Outdoor Shower Construction
With the pressure corrected and the supply points confirmed, we built the outdoor shower using 15mm hard-drawn copper pipe fixed neatly against the external brickwork.
To keep the finished installation visually clean and architectural, we used:
- B-Press fittings
- carefully clipped copper lines
- a layout designed to sit neatly and deliberately against the façade
For the controls, instead of standard chrome taps, we installed durable 15mm brass gate valves and sourced specialised red and blue spinning handles to identify the hot and cold supplies clearly.
All materials were sourced from Reece Plumbing Mentone.
This gave the owner a fully custom outdoor shower that felt more like a permanent design feature than an off-the-shelf add-on.
Final Result and Client Outcome
The finished result gave the owner:
- a custom-built outdoor shower
- hot and cold operation
- a design that suited the style of the home
- much better long-term durability in salty coastal air
- safer and more compliant pressure throughout the property
The owner was especially pleased that the final result did not look like a generic outdoor fixture. Instead, it became a real design feature of the home while still being built from practical plumbing materials chosen for the local environment.
Why This Installation Worked So Well for a Bayside Home
This project is a very good example of how the best plumbing solution is not always the most standard one.
In this case, the right result came from combining:
- correct material choice for the environment
- proper pressure control
- neat set-out and finishing
- a design that matched the architecture of the property
That is what turned the job from a basic outdoor rinse point into a long-lasting, well-integrated feature.
Compliance with Australian Standards
This case directly related to the pressure control requirements referenced under AS/NZS 3500, which limits residential water pressure to a maximum of 500 kPa.
In practical terms, this meant the outdoor shower installation was not just about the visible copper and brass fit-out. It also required proper control of the home’s incoming pressure so the new fittings and the wider plumbing system would be protected from excessive water force and long-term wear.
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing standards so new installations are not only visually successful, but also built on a properly protected plumbing system.
