Overview of the Job – Renovating an Older Bathroom to a Modern Layout

At a property on Centre Road in Bentleigh VIC 3204, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was engaged by the builder to carry out the plumbing work for a full bathroom renovation.

With the floorboards already removed, we had clear access to the existing underfloor plumbing infrastructure. That created a good starting point, but the new bathroom design required much more than reconnecting the existing layout.

The new plan called for:

  • a floating vanity
  • a stepless shower
  • a back-to-wall toilet
  • cleaner wall-mounted plumbing presentation

This is exactly the kind of project where homeowners and builders start asking, “what plumbing changes are needed for a modern bathroom renovation?” or “how do you prepare the pipework for a floating vanity and walk-in shower?” As an experienced plumber Bentleigh, we often find that the quality of a renovated bathroom depends heavily on how well the plumbing set-out is planned behind the walls and below the floor.

Why the Existing Plumbing Layout Had to Change

The original bathroom plumbing was based on a more traditional floor-waste layout with ageing valves and fittings that no longer suited the new design.

To achieve the cleaner, more modern finish the client wanted, the plumbing needed to be reconfigured so that:

  • waste points were correctly repositioned
  • new fixture outlets aligned with the proposed cabinetry and sanitaryware
  • the shower base and drainage system worked properly with the new stepless layout
  • pressure and temperature control across the home were brought up to standard

This was not just a cosmetic renovation. It required proper plumbing redesign to match the new bathroom layout safely and accurately.

Reconfiguring the Drainage for the New Bathroom Layout

One of the first major steps was adjusting the existing suspended drainage below the bathroom.

We reconfigured the sewer drain set-out to suit the new back-to-wall toilet, making sure the waste point aligned correctly with the new fixture position.

This part of the work was critical because once the bathroom was closed up, there would be very little room for correction. The set-out had to be right the first time.

Preparing the Wall for the Floating Vanity

To suit the new floating vanity design, we recessed the 40mm basin waste pipe directly into the wall studs.

This is a very important part of the plumbing set-out on floating vanity installations because it allows the underside of the vanity to remain visually clean, with no exposed waste pipe hanging beneath it.

Without that preparation, the floating vanity would lose the very look the renovation was trying to achieve.

Stepless Shower Preparation and Leak Control

For the new shower, we installed a leak control flange to the builder’s custom-made shower base.

This created the correct plumbing interface for the grated shower drain and allowed the shower base connection to be made in a way that would support a watertight finish once the waterproofing and tiling process was completed.

In practical terms, this was one of the most important hidden parts of the renovation, because a modern stepless shower only works properly when the drainage and sealing details are prepared accurately from the start.

In-Wall Shower Set-Out for the New Fit-Off

We also installed a high-centred water point with an in-wall mixer position specifically set out to suit the proposed twin shower arrangement.

That ensured the final fit-off would:

  • align correctly with the shower wall finish
  • suit the intended shower hardware
  • maintain the clean, modern layout the client was after

Again, this was all about precision. Good bathroom renovation plumbing is not just about connecting pipes — it is about putting every pipe in exactly the right place for the finished room.

Compliance Upgrades Beyond the Bathroom Itself

As part of the renovation, we also addressed two important plumbing compliance items affecting the wider home:

These were installed on the existing mains pressure gas hot water setup to bring both:

  • water pressure
  • hot water delivery temperature

into safer and more compliant operating conditions.

This was a very important part of the overall project because a beautifully finished bathroom still needs the supporting plumbing system behind it to operate safely and correctly.

Why the Pressure and Temperature Control Upgrades Matter

We explained that on bathroom renovations, it is not enough to focus only on the visual fixtures.

If the home still has:

  • excessive water pressure
  • unsafe hot water delivery
  • ageing or missing control valves

then even brand-new bathroom fittings may not perform the way they should over the long term.

This is why we often recommend these upgrades as part of renovation plumbing works. They help ensure the finished bathroom is not only modern in appearance, but also properly supported by compliant plumbing infrastructure.

Final Result and Client Outcome

The final result was a bathroom renovation with the plumbing set-out prepared properly for:

  • a floating vanity
  • a back-to-wall toilet
  • a stepless shower
  • modern in-wall shower controls
  • compliant pressure and temperature control

What the client sees on the finished surface is a modern bathroom. But what matters just as much is that the hidden plumbing behind the walls and below the floor has been positioned and upgraded correctly to support it.

Compliance with Australian Standards

This case related directly to the drainage, water service, and heated water requirements referenced under AS/NZS 3500, including the drainage principles under AS/NZS 3500.2 and the heated water service requirements under AS/NZS 3500.4.

In practical terms, this means the bathroom renovation was not just about aesthetics. The waste pipe positions, shower drainage preparation, pressure control, and hot water temperature control all needed to be carried out in a way that supports safe use, compliant operation, and long-term plumbing reliability.

All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing standards so the finished bathroom is backed by plumbing that is set out correctly and built to perform properly.
