Overview of the Problem – A 30-Year-Old Ensuite Shower Had Started Leaking Badly
At a property on Garwain Parade in Glen Waverley VIC 3150, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the homeowner reported a severely leaking ensuite shower.
The original shower was around 30 years old and had a poly-marble shower base that had cracked over time due to age and structural movement. That failure had allowed water to seep into the surrounding floorboards and sub-floor for an extended period.
Rather than ask for a temporary repair, the owner wanted the shower rebuilt properly and modernised at the same time.
This is exactly the type of situation where homeowners start asking, “can a leaking shower be rebuilt properly instead of patched?” or “what happens when an old shower base leaks into the floor?” As an experienced plumber Glen Waverley, we often explain that once an older shower base has cracked and water has been entering the structure, the right path is usually a full rebuild rather than a surface-level repair.
Why This Was More Than a Standard Shower Leak
Once demolition began, the extent of the problem became much clearer.
The failing shower base and surrounding cement work had already caused damage to the timber below, and the owner also wanted the new ensuite upgraded to a more modern stepless shower entry.
That meant the job was no longer just about stopping the leak. It required:
- removal of the old shower structure
- structural preparation of the floor
- drainage renewal
- wall and niche framing
- waterproofing
- final plumbing fit-off to suit the new design
This is something we often explain on leaking shower jobs, because once water has entered the floor structure, a complete rebuild is often the only way to restore the shower properly and protect the bathroom long term.
Demolition and Structural Preparation
The first stage involved carefully removing the existing shower components so we could expose the damaged area and prepare the space for the new layout.
We:
- removed the existing shower screen so it could be reused
- removed the old tiles and plasterboard
- exposed the floor and wall framing around the failed shower base
Because the owner wanted a stepless shower entry, we also needed to alter the floor structure to lower the shower area.
To achieve that, we cut the existing floorboards and lowered the timber floor joists by approximately 30mm to create the required recessed base area.
Rebuilding the Shower Base Structure
Once the floor level had been adjusted, we carried out the structural preparation needed to support the new shower base properly.
This included:
- installing additional timber supports
- laying 19mm compressed cement sheeting to create a new rigid shower base platform
- sealing all critical edges with high-grade polyurethane sealant
This stage was very important because a stepless shower only performs well if the base underneath is stable, properly prepared, and built to support both waterproofing and final finishes correctly.
Replacing the Internal Shower Drainage
With the floor open, it was also the right time to address the older drainage components hidden below the shower.
We:
- removed the aged shower outlet drain
- installed a new P-trap
- set a new pipe riser to suit the modern shower grate arrangement
This meant the finished shower would not only look new on the surface, but would also have updated drainage below the floor where it matters most.
This is something we often explain on blocked drains Melbourne and shower drainage jobs, because rebuilding a shower without renewing ageing waste components below the base can leave hidden problems in place.
Wall Framing, Shower Niche, and Waterproofing Preparation
Once the floor structure and drainage had been rebuilt, we moved to the wall preparation stage.
We recessed and framed a custom 300mm x 400mm shower niche to provide a clean built-in storage space for shower products.
We then installed new plasterboard and prepared the entire wet area for waterproofing.
At that point, the shower received a multi-coat waterproofing membrane system so the rebuilt base, wall junctions, and shower enclosure could be protected properly before final tiling and fit-off.
New Shower Tapware and Rail Shower Upgrade
For the final plumbing fit-off, we upgraded the old-fashioned shower controls and fittings to a much more modern setup.
We installed:
- Posh Solus Shower Mixer Tap (Chrome)
- Posh Domaine Twin Rail Shower with Top Rail Water Inlet (Chrome)
These were sourced from Reece Plumbing Burwood.
This gave the shower:
- a cleaner and more modern finish
- better day-to-day functionality
- improved user comfort
- a much stronger visual result than the original ageing tapware and single outlet setup
Managing the Ensuite Rebuild as a Complete Project
A major part of the value on this job was that we managed the project from demolition right through to final clean-up, coordinating the required trades as part of the process.
That meant the owner did not have to separately manage:
- demolition sequencing
- structural preparation
- waterproofing coordination
- plumbing stages
- tiling and reinstatement timing
For a leaking ensuite rebuild, that kind of coordinated approach makes a big difference to the final result.
Final Result and Client Outcome
The final result gave the homeowner:
- a fully rebuilt leak-free shower
- a modern stepless entry
- renewed shower drainage below the floor
- upgraded waterproofing system
- premium new shower fittings
- a much more modern and valuable ensuite overall
What had started as a leaking 30-year-old shower was transformed into a high-end walk-in shower built properly from the structure upward.
Compliance with Australian Standards
This case related directly to the drainage and sanitary plumbing principles referenced in AS/NZS 3500.2, together with the waterproofing requirements for domestic wet areas under AS 3740.
In practical terms, this meant the rebuild had to do much more than look good when finished. The shower base structure, drainage, waterproofing, and wet-area preparation all had to be carried out properly so the new ensuite would remain watertight and reliable long term.
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing and wet-area standards so leaking shower rebuilds are done properly from behind the tiles outward.
