Overview of the Problem – Wet Patch in the Lawn Caused by a Burst Main
At a property on Clarinda Road in Clarinda VIC 3169, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the homeowner noticed a persistent wet patch developing in the front lawn around two metres away from the water meter.
A wet area appearing suddenly in a grassed section like this is often one of the clearest signs of an underground water main leak. If left unresolved, this kind of problem can lead to:
- rising water bills
- wasted water beneath the property frontage
- soft or eroding ground conditions
- further pressure-related pipe failures
This is exactly the type of situation where homeowners start asking, “why is my front lawn suddenly wet near the meter?” or “how do you find a burst water main underground?” As an experienced plumber Clarinda, we often find that visible ground moisture is only the surface sign of a deeper pressure-related water service problem.
Excavation Confirmed the Water Main Had Cracked
Once we excavated the affected area, we exposed the underground water service and confirmed the source of the leak.
The problem was a 20mm copper water pipe with a hairline crack spraying water under pressure.
To repair the line properly, we first excavated a deeper sump below the leak point. This allowed muddy water to drain down away from the repair area and was an important part of the job because it reduced the risk of dirt and debris flowing back into the water line during the repair process.
That step helped keep the repair controlled and the water service cleaner when it was brought back online.
Precision Copper Repair Using B-Press Technology
Once the damaged section had been exposed and isolated, we removed approximately 200mm of failed copper pipe.
We then prepared the existing pipe ends carefully, making sure rough edges were removed before the new section was installed.
To rebuild the line, we used:
- a new section of copper pipe
- slip sockets
- our Rothenberger B-Press tool
This gave the property a strong mechanical repair with a clean, permanent join rather than a rushed patch or temporary clamp-style solution.
This is something we often explain on burst pipe repairs jobs, because with buried water service repairs, the long-term reliability of the new joint matters just as much as stopping the visible leak.
Flushing the Water Service After the Repair
Once the pipe was rejoined and the repair completed, we flushed the water main and internal taps to ensure the line was free of any sediment before returning the property to normal use.
This was an important final step because when underground repairs are carried out, even with careful excavation, the water service should always be flushed through properly before the job is considered complete.
Pressure Testing Revealed the Bigger Cause of the Burst
After the immediate leak had been repaired, we carried out a diagnostic water pressure test at the property.
The reading came back at 920 kPa.
That is dramatically above the 500 kPa maximum referenced under AS/NZS 3500 and immediately explained why the ageing copper pipe had fractured.
We explained to the owner that this sort of excessive mains pressure, especially when pressure rises even higher during lower-usage periods such as overnight, can place enormous stress on older copper pipework and eventually cause weakened sections to crack.
This is something we often explain on pressure limiting valve and PRV installation jobs, because in many burst main cases the visible leak is really the final result of a much larger pressure problem.
Installing Pressure Protection at the Meter
To protect the repaired water main and the rest of the property’s plumbing system, we sourced and installed a:
20mm Zurn right-angle pressure regulating valve
This was fitted at the water meter and then calibrated to reduce the property’s pressure to a compliant 500 kPa.
That meant the job did not stop at repairing the burst section itself. The home’s plumbing system was also brought back into a much safer operating range to reduce the risk of:
- further main bursts
- fixture wear
- valve failures
- ongoing stress on the copper pipework throughout the property
Why Pressure Reduction Was Just as Important as the Pipe Repair
This job is a very good example of why a burst pipe repair should not end once the leak is stopped.
If the damaged copper section had simply been replaced and the home left running at 920 kPa, the rest of the existing pipework would still have been exposed to the same excessive pressure that caused the first fracture.
By reducing the pressure back to a compliant level, we gave the owner a much stronger long-term outcome and significantly improved the chances of the remaining copper lines continuing to perform reliably.
Final Result and Client Outcome
Once the works were complete, the homeowner had:
- the burst underground copper water main repaired properly
- the water service flushed and restored
- the true cause of the burst identified
- a new pressure regulating valve installed
- water pressure reduced from 920 kPa to a compliant 500 kPa
- much better long-term protection for the home’s plumbing system
The owner was very pleased that the problem had been handled thoroughly, rather than just stopping the leak and leaving the wider pressure risk unresolved.
Compliance with Australian Standards
This case directly related to the pressure control requirements referenced under AS/NZS 3500, which requires residential water pressure to be regulated to a maximum of 500 kPa, together with the correct repair of a damaged water service line.
In practical terms, this meant the job was not only about replacing the cracked section of copper pipe. It was also about correcting the excessive water pressure that had likely caused the burst in the first place, so the repaired line and the rest of the home’s plumbing would be better protected moving forward.
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing standards so burst pipe repairs are handled properly and not treated as isolated failures when wider system pressure is involved.
