At a home on Warrigal Road in Burwood VIC 3125, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the homeowner noticed a toilet draining slowly and suspected a minor blockage.

At first glance, a slow toilet can look like a simple local issue inside the pan or trap. But in older homes, and especially where drainage layouts are more complex, a slow toilet can be the first warning sign of a larger sewer problem developing further down the line.

This is exactly the type of situation where homeowners start asking, “is my slow toilet just blocked or is it the main blocked drain?” or “do I need a CCTV drain inspection if the toilet is still sort of working?” As an experienced plumber Burwood, we know that the difference between a local fixture blockage and a main sewer problem can only be confirmed properly through testing and diagnosis, not guesswork.

The Problem – A Slow Toilet That Pointed to Something Bigger

When we arrived, the homeowner’s main concern was the slow-draining toilet.

But on jobs like this, we do not stop at the fixture itself. A toilet can drain slowly for several different reasons, including:

  • a local paper blockage
  • weak flushing performance
  • a partial restriction in the branch drain
  • or a more serious blockage in the main sewer line

That is why the first step was not to assume the problem was minor. It was to carry out the right testing outside the home and see what the drainage system was telling us.

The First Key Test – Checking the Overflow Relief Gully

Our first diagnostic step was to inspect the Overflow Relief Gully (ORG) outside the property.

The ORG was not yet overflowing, but the water level in the riser was clearly sitting much higher than normal. That was a very important clue.

A raised water level at the ORG typically means the issue is no longer just inside one fixture. It means the drainage system is under pressure and the main sewer line may already be partially or fully blocked.

This immediately shifted the diagnosis away from “just a slow toilet” and toward a much bigger sewer drainage issue.

Confirming the Main Sewer Drain Was the Real Problem

Because the property shared a drain system with a neighbouring property and the main Inspection Shaft was located next door, we also checked the Boundary Trap connection to narrow down where the blockage was sitting.

That testing confirmed the blockage was upstream, meaning the restriction was affecting the main drain run serving the home, not just the individual toilet.

This is exactly why proper diagnosis matters so much. If this had been treated like a small local blockage only, the main issue would have been missed and the homeowner would likely have faced the same problem again soon after.

Why Hydro Jetting Was the Right Drain Clearing Method

Once the main sewer blockage had been confirmed, we recommended clearing the line using a combination of:

That was the right approach because a main sewer blockage should not just be pushed through blindly. It should be:

  • cleared properly
  • tested properly
  • and then checked internally to confirm the condition of the pipe

This gives the homeowner a much stronger result than a simple unblock alone, because it helps answer two separate questions:

  1. Is the drain flowing again?
  2. Is there a structural problem that is likely to cause the blockage to return?

Clearing the Sewer Blockage Properly

To access the drain, we used the external 100mm inspection opening bend.

From there, we carried out high-pressure jetting to clear the blockage through the main sewer line. As the line cleared, the sound and response of the system confirmed that water had begun discharging properly again.

That mattered because it restored function to the drain, but we still needed to confirm whether anything inside the pipe had caused or contributed to the blockage.

CCTV Drain Inspection Confirmed the Pipe Was Sound

Once the sewer line had been reopened, we followed the clearing process with a CCTV drain camera inspection.

This is a crucial step in blocked sewer work because it allows us to inspect the pipe internally rather than guessing what condition it is in after the blockage is removed.

The CCTV inspection showed that the main 100mm UPVC sewer drain was structurally sound and free from pipe defects.

That was a very good result for the homeowner, because it meant there was:

  • no pipe collapse
  • no crack or break needing excavation
  • no tree root intrusion
  • and no hidden structural damage behind the blockage

Instead, the sewer had blocked due to what was most likely non-dissolving foreign material entering the drain.

The Likely Cause – Items That Should Never Be Flushed

Because the pipework itself was confirmed to be sound, the likely explanation came back to what had recently entered the drain.

The homeowner had already suspected that recent visitors may have flushed products other than toilet paper. That lined up well with the findings.

In homes with modern low-flush toilets, non-dissolving items like wipes and sanitary products are a very common cause of sewer restrictions. These items do not break down properly, can catch inside the line, and may build up enough material to choke the sewer even when the pipe itself is structurally fine.

This was an important outcome because it gave the homeowner peace of mind that the problem was not hidden pipe damage — and it also gave them clear advice on how to reduce the risk of the issue happening again.

The Result – Blockage Cleared and Sewer Condition Verified

Once the work was complete, the homeowner had:

  • the main sewer blockage cleared properly
  • the slow toilet issue resolved
  • the ORG and boundary trap behaviour properly investigated
  • the sewer line checked internally with camera equipment
  • confirmation that the drain itself was still in sound condition

That made this a much better outcome than a simple unblock alone.

Instead of just restoring temporary flow, the job also gave the homeowner a clear answer about the condition of the drain and the likely cause of the blockage.

Why This Job Matters

This case is a strong example of why slow toilets should not always be treated as isolated fixture problems.

In many homes, the toilet is simply the first place the sewer starts showing symptoms. If the plumber only focuses on the pan and ignores the wider system, the actual blockage can be missed.

It also shows why combining hydro jet drain cleaning with a CCTV drain inspection gives homeowners much more value. The first step clears the blockage. The second step explains whether the pipe itself is damaged or not.

That is how you move from guesswork to proper sewer diagnosis.
