Overview of the Problem – A Burst Water Main at the Worst Possible Time

At a property on Park Street in Malvern VIC 3144, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the owners noticed a very wet patch developing in the side garden bed beside their concrete driveway.

Under normal circumstances, a burst underground water main is already stressful enough. In this case, the timing was even worse, because the owners were preparing to place their architecturally designed home on the market and did not want the property’s presentation compromised by major excavation works.

This is exactly the type of situation where homeowners start asking, “can a burst water main be repaired without cutting concrete?” or “what do you do if the burst pipe is under the driveway?” As an experienced plumber Malvern, we often find that the right solution is not always the most obvious one — especially when protecting the appearance of the property matters just as much as stopping the leak.

Why We Needed to Confirm the Exact Leak Location First

Although the side garden bed was clearly wet, we did not want to assume that the leak was directly beneath the damp patch.

With buried water main leaks, water often travels through the soil and surfaces away from the actual point of failure. That means a visible wet spot can be misleading.

Before recommending excavation, we wanted to know with certainty:

  • whether the burst was actually in the garden bed
  • whether the leak had tracked from another location
  • whether cutting concrete would really be necessary
  • or whether a better rerouting option might be possible

This is something we often explain on water leak detection jobs, because the more accurately the leak is located first, the more precisely the repair can be planned.

Electronic Leak Detection Confirmed the Pipe Had Burst Under the Driveway

To avoid unnecessary digging, we used electronic leak detection equipment to pinpoint the true location of the failure.

The detection process confirmed the worst-case scenario: the burst was not in the garden bed itself. The damaged section of water main was actually located under the concrete driveway, and the water was only surfacing through the adjacent garden bed after travelling through the ground.

That was a critical finding because it meant a conventional repair would normally have involved:

  • trenching through the driveway
  • cutting finished concrete
  • disrupting the front presentation of the home
  • creating reinstatement works right before the property was due to be shown for sale

So although the leak had now been positively identified, the standard repair route was not the right outcome for the owners.

Recording the Meter Reading for the Owner’s Water Loss Claim

As part of the job, we also recorded the water meter reading on the invoice.

That was done for a practical reason.

In Melbourne, water authorities such as South East Water may allow homeowners to apply for a leakage allowance on an unforeseen burst water service event, generally subject to their policy conditions and claim limits. Recording the meter reading provided the owners with supporting documentation to help them pursue that process and avoid being left with a large water bill for water they never actually used.

This was an important part of the service because it helped protect the owners financially as well as physically resolving the burst main.

Why Rerouting the Main Was Better Than Cutting the Driveway

Once the burst had been confirmed under the driveway, we discussed the options with the owners.

Instead of cutting through the concrete and carrying out a conventional underground section replacement, we proposed a much cleaner and more practical solution:

  • abandon the failed buried section
  • reroute the water main above ground
  • reconnect the home without disturbing the driveway surface

For a property about to go on the market, this was clearly the smarter option. It avoided damage to the driveway and preserved the home’s street appeal while still giving the owners a permanent repair.

Installing the New Copper Water Main Route

To carry out the new route, we ran a fresh copper water line externally along the brick wall of the home.

From there, we drilled a neat penetration and reconnected the new service through a void in the garage service shaft area so the supply could be brought back into the home cleanly.

This gave the property:

  • a brand-new permanent water service route
  • no need to break up the driveway
  • a neater repair outcome than trenching through the finished frontage
  • much better confidence for both the current owners and future buyers

This is something we often explain on burst pipe repairs jobs, because sometimes the best repair is not to fight the failed buried route — it is to replace the route entirely in a smarter way.

B-Press Copper Installation for a Clean Finish

To keep the external pipework neat and professional, we used Rothenberger B-Press tools and copper press fittings rather than torch-based soldering.

This gave the installation:

  • a very clean finish against the external wall
  • strong mechanical copper joints
  • a more controlled result on a finished residential property
  • a professional appearance suited to a high-end Malvern home

All materials were sourced from Reece Plumbing Armadale.

For this type of visible reroute, presentation matters, and the B-Press method helped deliver a very tidy final result.

Pressure Protection for the New Water Service

As part of the works, we also installed a new pressure limiting valve to keep the home’s water pressure at a safe and compliant level.

This was an important part of the job because there is little point installing a new water main route if the system is still being exposed to unnecessary pressure stress that could shorten the life of the pipework again in future.

By regulating the incoming pressure properly, the new installation now has much better long-term protection.

Why This Was a Better Outcome Than a Standard Burst Pipe Repair

This case is a very good example of why burst pipe repairs should be planned around the property, not just the damaged pipe itself.

A basic repair would have stopped the leak, but it would also have:

  • damaged the driveway
  • reduced the presentation of the home
  • created extra restoration work
  • added disruption right before the sale process

By choosing a reroute instead, the owners were able to:

  • solve the burst permanently
  • preserve the appearance of the property
  • avoid driveway demolition
  • move forward with the sale confidently

Final Result and Client Outcome

Once the works were complete, the owners had:

  • the buried burst water main accurately located
  • the failed underground route bypassed
  • a new above-ground copper water main installed
  • the home reconnected neatly through the garage service area
  • new pressure regulation installed at the meter
  • supporting documentation for their water-loss claim

The owners were very pleased that the leak had been resolved properly without sacrificing the street appeal of the property at such an important time.

Compliance with Australian Standards

This case directly related to the renewal and re-routing of a domestic water service line together with system pressure control in line with the requirements referenced under AS/NZS 3500, which requires residential pressure to be regulated to a maximum of 500 kPa.

In practical terms, this meant the job was not just about stopping the visible leak. It was also about ensuring the replacement water service route was installed properly and then protected from excessive mains pressure moving forward.
