Overview of the Job – Upgrading an Older Pedestal Basin to a Modern Mixer
At a property on Thames Promenade in Chelsea VIC 3196, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out after the homeowner decided to modernise an older pedestal basin fitted with separate hot and cold taps.
While the original setup still had a traditional look, it was no longer practical for everyday use. Like many older basin installations, adjusting the temperature meant trying to balance two separate outlets, which the owner found awkward and outdated.
This is exactly the type of situation where homeowners start asking, “can I change old separate basin taps to a mixer?” or “can a pedestal basin be upgraded without replacing the whole basin?” As an experienced plumber Chelsea, we often find that older bathroom fixtures can be modernised successfully, but the supporting plumbing underneath often needs to be brought up to a safer and more serviceable standard at the same time.
Why the Upgrade Needed More Than Just a New Basin Mixer
Once we began decommissioning the old tapware, two important issues became clear.
The first was that the original plumbing had no local isolation valves installed on the basin supplies. That meant a simple future repair at the basin could require shutting off water to the whole house.
The second issue was the home’s mains water pressure.
As part of our standard checks, we tested the water pressure and confirmed it was running above the compliant limit. That was particularly important on a new mixer installation, because excessive pressure can lead to:
- splashing at the outlet
- premature cartridge wear
- extra stress on the new mixer internals
- ongoing strain on the wider plumbing system
So although the visible job was a basin tap upgrade, the plumbing underneath clearly needed improvement as well.
Converting the Old Pedestal Basin to a Single Mixer
To modernise the basin properly, we installed a new single basin flick mixer.
Because the original pedestal basin had been designed for two separate tap holes, one opening became redundant once the new mixer was installed.
To maintain a clean and professional finish, we fitted an approved chrome cap to neatly close off the unused hole. This allowed the basin to retain its neat appearance while still benefiting from the practicality of a modern mixer setup.
The final result gave the owner:
- simpler temperature control
- easier everyday use
- a cleaner modernised look
- continued use of the existing pedestal basin without unnecessary replacement
Installing Emergency Stop Taps for Future Servicing
As part of the upgrade, we also installed new emergency stop taps on both the hot and cold supply lines serving the basin.
This was an important improvement because it now allows the basin to be isolated locally for future maintenance without affecting the rest of the home.
That makes future servicing much easier and far more practical than older setups where the whole home has to be shut down just to work on one fixture.
Pressure Protection for the New Mixer and the Whole Home
Because the property’s mains pressure was above the allowable limit, we also installed a pressure regulating valve at the water meter.
This was the right long-term solution because it protects:
- the newly installed basin mixer
- the rest of the home’s fixtures and valves
- the pipework throughout the property
- the overall plumbing system from ongoing high-pressure stress
Once installed, we calibrated the pressure down to a safe and compliant level below 500 kPa.
This is something we often explain on leaking tap repairs jobs as well, because excessive pressure is often one of the hidden reasons older tapware fails early and new ceramic mixers do not last as long as they should.
Final Result and Client Outcome
Once the works were complete, the pedestal basin had been successfully modernised without losing its original overall style.
The owner now had:
- a new single basin flick mixer
- easier and more comfortable temperature control
- neatly capped unused basin opening
- new emergency stop taps for simple future servicing
- compliant pressure protection at the meter
This gave them a better day-to-day bathroom experience while also improving the long-term serviceability and protection of the plumbing system.
Compliance with Australian Standards
This case directly related to the pressure control requirements referenced under AS/NZS 3500, which requires residential water pressure to be regulated to a maximum of 500 kPa, as well as the broader expectations around safe and serviceable plumbing fixture installations.
In practical terms, this meant the job was not just about replacing old separate taps with a mixer. It was also about making sure the basin could be isolated properly for future maintenance and that the new mixer was protected from excessive pressure that could shorten its service life.
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing standards so the home is not only upgraded visually, but improved functionally and protected for the long term.
