Overview of the Job – Burst Copper Pipe and Hidden Risks in the Home
At a property on Airley Road in Glen Iris VIC 3146, our team at Your Choice Plumbers was called out for a burst copper pipe in the front garden just after the water meter.
We repaired the burst section using copper pipe and B-press fittings, restoring the water service properly and safely.
Once the immediate burst pipe issue was under control, the wider condition of the home’s plumbing system became much more important. As an experienced plumber Glen Iris, we often find that when one visible plumbing failure occurs in an older home, there can be other hidden issues sitting quietly in the background as well.
That proved to be exactly the case here.
Immediate Burst Pipe Repair at the Front Water Service
The burst was located in the front garden, just after the water meter on the main water service entering the property.
We carried out the repair by:
- isolating the water supply
- cutting out the failed copper section
- replacing it with new copper pipe
- using B-press fittings for a secure and reliable repair
This restored the water service to the home and resolved the immediate burst pipe problem.
Complimentary Property Protection Audit Found More Hidden Problems
As part of the plumbing service, we also carried out our complimentary Complimentary Property Protection Audit.
Because the home was an older California bungalow and the owners had not had a licensed plumber properly assess the plumbing system in around 10 years, the audit quickly uncovered additional hidden concerns.
Our reporting identified:
- multiple rusty and tea-stained flexi hoses throughout the home
- excessively high water pressure reading of 920 kPa
These are exactly the types of issues many homeowners do not realise are present until something fails.
Where the Risky Flexi Hoses Were Found
During the audit, we identified ageing and high-risk flexible hoses across multiple areas of the house, including:
- both bathrooms
- laundry
- kitchen
The older home layout actually made access easier for replacement, because:
- the taps were hob-mounted tap sets
- the toilets were classic S-bend suites
That meant we were able to carry out the hose replacements efficiently and thoroughly without unnecessary complications.
Why the Water Pressure Was a Major Compliance Issue
The recorded pressure of 920 kPa was far above the recommended maximum of 500 kPa referenced under AS/NZS 3500.
At that pressure level, the plumbing system was under significant ongoing stress.
We explained to the client that excessive water pressure like this can:
- shorten the life of flexi hoses
- contribute to leaking taps and toilet failures
- increase the chance of burst pipes
- place unnecessary strain on valves, appliances, and fittings
- create insurance and compliance concerns if left unresolved
In other words, the burst copper pipe was likely only one visible sign of a much broader pressure-related plumbing problem.
Full Flexi Hose Replacement Throughout the Home
Because the owners were pleased these hidden issues had been identified before something worse happened, they chose to proceed with a full flexi hose replacement throughout the house.
We replaced the high-risk hoses serving:
- the two bathrooms
- the laundry
- the kitchen
This allowed the owners to deal with the broader flood-risk issues properly rather than waiting for the next failure to occur.
Pressure Regulating Valve Installation
To bring the home into safer and more compliant operating conditions, we also installed a:
Zurn 20mm right-angle pressure regulating valve
This was fitted at the meter to reduce the excessive incoming pressure down to a safe and compliant 500 kPa.
That upgrade was critical because replacing hoses alone would not have solved the larger problem if the home had remained exposed to excessive pressure. This is something we often explain on pressure regulating valve jobs, because correcting excessive mains pressure can significantly reduce future plumbing failures across the home.
Completed in One Visit with Certificate of Compliance
A very strong outcome on this job was that we completed:
- the burst pipe repair
- the audit
- the full flexi hose replacement
- the pressure regulating valve installation
all within the same 3-hour window.
Once the works were complete, we issued the client with a Certificate of Compliance for the plumbing work carried out.
That gave the owners not only practical protection, but also formal documentation confirming the works had been completed by a licensed plumber to the required standard.
Outcome and Client Result
- burst copper pipe repaired at the front water service
- complimentary audit completed
- multiple rusty / tea-stained flexi hoses identified
- full-house hose replacement completed
- water pressure reduced from 920 kPa to compliant level
- PRV installed at the meter
- Certificate of Compliance issued
The owner was extremely pleased that what started as a burst pipe callout led to the discovery and repair of other hidden risks throughout the home before they could become bigger problems.
Compliance & Prevention Insight
This case highlights why older homes that have not been checked by a licensed plumber for many years often carry multiple hidden plumbing risks at once.
In this case, the visible problem was a burst copper pipe, but the audit revealed broader long-term concerns:
- excessive pressure
- ageing flexi hoses
- multiple hidden flood risks across the house
It also shows why pressure regulation is such an important part of prevention. Without reducing the water pressure, the home would have continued placing unnecessary stress on every hose, valve, and fixture in the system.
Compliance with Australian Standards
All work carried out by Your Choice Plumbers is completed in accordance with the relevant plumbing standards, including the pressure requirements referenced under AS/NZS 3500.
In simple terms, this means the home’s plumbing is not only repaired, but also checked and upgraded in a way that helps reduce flood risk, improve compliance, and protect the entire system from avoidable damage.
