Clearing Stubborn Island Bench Fat Deposits with Precision Hydro-Jetting

The Challenge: The Recurring “Island Bench” Blockage

A homeowner on White Street called us out for a frustratingly blocked kitchen sink on their island bench. This wasn’t a one-off issue; for the past two years, the drain would block up, get “cleared” by a quick plunge or chemical cleaner, only to block up again a few months later. At 20 years old, the house was reaching that age where standard maintenance wasn’t enough to tackle the deep-seated build-up.

The Discovery: 20 Years of Solidified Cooking Fat

Based on the client’s history of the drain, our plumber knew this was more than just a trapped teaspoon or a bit of food scrap.

• The Root Cause: Over two decades, small amounts of cooking oils and fats (even those rinsed with hot water) had settled in the 50mm riser and the 100mm main sewer line below. This fat solidifies into a hard, waxy substance that narrows the pipe diameter until even a small amount of waste causes a total backup.
• The Diagnostic: We explained that plunging would only poke a small hole in the “fat berg”—we needed to strip the pipe walls clean to get a permanent result.

The Solution: Precision High-Pressure Jetting (Inside the Kitchen)

Working with high-pressure water inside a clean kitchen requires serious control. We took a specialized approach to protect the home:

• The Setup: The client cleared the under-sink area, and we thoroughly protected the cabinetry. We used our portable mini reel with a 1/8 inch whip hose. This thinner hose is perfect for navigating the tight bends of a 50mm kitchen drain.
• The Gear: We used a specialized penetrating nozzle (1 forward jet to break the fat and 4 rear jets to propel the hose and scour the walls).
• The Process: We accessed the drain through the 50mm 90° I.O. (Inspection Opening) bend. Using the mini reel’s on/off valve, we carefully pulsed the water to minimize any “blowback” or overspill while the nozzle chewed through the fat.
• The Breakthrough: As soon as we hit the blockage, a characteristic “brown froth” began to emerge—a clear sign of old fats being broken down. Once we broke through the main mass, we switched to continuous high-pressure thrust to scour the entire line from the sink to the main sewer.
• The Flush: After jetting, we ran all the taps and flushed every toilet in the house several times to ensure all the dislodged fat particles were carried all the way out to the South East Water mains.

The Verdict

The “echo” of the jetter through the pipes confirmed the drain was back to its original 50mm diameter. We advised the client that most kitchen drains need this “deep clean” every 10–15 years to prevent permanent damage or total backups. The island bench sink is now draining faster than it has in years, and the homeowner was wrapped with the tidy, professional way we handled a potentially messy job.
