Solving a Sewer Overflow with CCTV and “Root Ranger” Technology

The Challenge: The Gurgling Bathroom and Sewage Overflow

A resident on North Road contacted us after their toilet became sluggish and a loud gurgling sound started echoing through the bathroom pipes. Upon arrival, we saw a clear sign of a major blockage: the external Overflow Relief Gully (ORG) was overflowing with sewage. This is a safety feature designed to keep sewage from backing up into the house, but it meant the main sewer line was completely choked.

The Discovery: Pinpointing the Boundary Trap Failure

We traced the issue down the line to the Boundary Trap (BT) at the edge of the property.

• The Diagnostic: We found the sewer was overflowing through the ground vent at the boundary trap. This confirmed the blockage was deep in the system—either at the connection to the South East Water main or in the “lead-in” pipe connecting the house to the inspection shaft.
• CCTV Investigation: After clearing the backup with our high-pressure jetter, we dropped our CCTV Drain Camera into the terracotta riser. The footage revealed heavy tree root intrusion right at the “lead-in” junction. The old terracotta pipes had developed a crack, and because the system was roughly 60 years old, the leaking water had likely been weakening the surrounding soil for quite some time.

The Solution: Targeted Clearing & Complete Boundary Trap Renewal

To clear the obstruction and provide a permanent fix, we used a combination of high-tech gear and precision excavation:

• The Mustang Root Ranger: We fitted our hydro-jetter with the Mustang Root Ranger Nozzle to aggressively shred the roots and restore flow immediately.
• The Permanent Fix: We explained to the owners that simply patching the crack wouldn’t be enough. Given the age of the system and the compromised support under the boundary trap, we recommended a complete Boundary Trap Renewal.
• The Overhaul: The owners wisely chose the “do it all once and forget about it” approach. We excavated the area, removed the brittle terracotta, and installed a modern, flexible uPVC assembly including the boundary trap connection, lead-in junction, and the riser. This eliminates the chance of future root intrusion and ensures the ground support is solid.
• Sourcing: All replacement uPVC fittings and specialised drainage components were sourced from the nearby Reece Plumbing in Caulfield.
